A tragic accident early Friday morning in Spartanburg County has left one person dead after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 26.
What Happened
According to the South Carolina Department of Transportation, the crash was reported around 3:24 a.m. in the westbound lanes near mile marker 9. The incident caused all lanes to be blocked for several hours.
Officials later confirmed that traffic resumed before 9 a.m. after emergency crews cleared the scene.
Details of the Crash
Troopers from the South Carolina Highway Patrol shared that the crash involved two vehicles:
- A 2013 Ford Transit van
- A Kenworth tractor-trailer
The van was reportedly travelling in the wrong direction—eastbound in the westbound lanes—when it collided head-on with the tractor-trailer.
Injuries and Casualties
The driver of the tractor-trailer was injured and taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Sadly, the driver of the Ford van died at the scene.
The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office has not yet released the identity of the deceased.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is working to determine how the vehicle ended up travelling the wrong way on the interstate.
