A Blythewood man has been charged with threatening a public official after allegedly sending letters containing references to the official’s workplace, family, and children’s school.
Man Charged by SLED
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) charged 57-year-old Dewayne Simmons on June 4 with threatening the life, person, or family of a public official.
He was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.
Alleged Threatening Letters
According to the arrest warrant, Simmons allegedly mailed several letters between February and April 2026.
Investigators said the letters contained details about the official’s daily activities, workplace, and the school attended by the official’s children.
One letter reportedly referenced the use of a silencer and possible locations near the official’s workplace.
Official Not Identified
Authorities have not released the name of the public official involved, and the identity remains redacted in court records.
The alleged incidents occurred in Richland County.
Potential Penalties
The charge is a felony under South Carolina law when threats are connected to a public official’s duties.
If convicted, Simmons could face up to five years in prison, a fine of up to $5,000, or both.
