A Port Royal police officer was injured Thursday after his department-issued firearm accidentally discharged while he was cleaning it.
Officer Injured During Accidental Discharge
According to the Port Royal Police Department, Staff Sergeant Steven Colson was cleaning his pistol at the police department around 2 p.m. when the firearm unintentionally discharged.
Non-Life-Threatening Injuries
Officials said Colson suffered injuries to his hand and thigh.
He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, and authorities described his injuries as non-life-threatening.
Investigation Underway
The Port Royal Police Department said the incident remains under investigation.
