Camp North End in Charlotte, N.C., has introduced a new curfew aimed at curbing unsupervised teen gatherings. Effective Friday, the curfew mandates that anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a chaperone after 6 p.m. This move comes after an increase in unauthorized teen takeovers at the property over recent weekends.

Increased Security and Patrols

To enforce the new curfew, Camp North End has ramped up security measures. Observers have reported seeing at least two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) cruisers alongside a private security firm patrolling the area. These increased measures aim to ensure compliance with the new curfew and address growing concerns about teen activities on the property.

Community Reactions: A Mixed Response

While the curfew aims to address the issue of unsupervised gatherings, reactions from the community are mixed. Charlotte resident Chance Brown, who frequently visits the area, shared his perspective with WCCB, stating that he rarely sees teens causing trouble. He expressed his belief that the new curfew was an overreaction, particularly for older teens who can drive. “When I was a teenager, I kind of just roamed the streets. I wasn’t doing anything crazy,” Brown said. “As long as they’re not causing trouble, I don’t see any harm in that. Six p.m. is kind of crazy, especially if they are 16 and up, and they can drive.”

Curfew Trends in the Region

Camp North End isn’t the only area in the region to adopt such measures. Earlier this year, Birkdale Village in Huntersville also introduced a similar 6 p.m. curfew for unsupervised teens. The trend reflects growing concerns from local authorities about the safety and security of public spaces frequented by young people without adult supervision.

The implementation of these curfews is part of a broader effort to manage teen activity in popular public areas while maintaining a safe environment for all visitors.
