A North Charleston Police Department bureau commander has filed a lawsuit against the city and the police department, alleging age discrimination, retaliation, and a hostile work environment.
Lawsuit Filed Against City and Police Department
Tammy Sad claims she faced discrimination and retaliation while working for the North Charleston Police Department. The lawsuit names both the City of North Charleston and the police department as defendants.
The allegations center on events that occurred after Police Chief Ron Camacho was hired in late 2024.
Claims of Discrimination and Retaliation
According to the lawsuit, Sad alleges that employees who disagreed with leadership faced retaliation and that women and minorities were subjected to discrimination and a hostile work environment.
She also claims she was passed over for a position within the Special Investigations Division after being promoted to captain, while a male officer was selected for the role.
Age-Related Comments Alleged
The lawsuit alleges that Camacho made comments about investing in younger employees and building a “younger looking department.”
Sad claims these remarks were directed at older officers and contributed to an age-discriminatory work environment.
Formal Complaint Filed
After being informed she would be transferred to another bureau, Sad filed a formal complaint with Human Resources in August 2025.
According to the lawsuit, the transfer was paused while an investigation was conducted.
No Public Response Yet
The City of North Charleston and the North Charleston Police Department have not publicly commented on the allegations. The claims remain allegations and have not been proven in court.
