Beachgoers visiting Sullivan’s Island on Thursday are being urged to use caution due to a moderate risk of rip currents.
Multiple Water Rescues Reported
The warning comes after Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue responded to three water-related incidents on Wednesday involving swimmers in distress.
According to officials, strong currents, rough surf, and gusty coastal winds created dangerous swimming conditions.
Swimmers Rescued
The first incident occurred near Station 18 around 3:45 p.m. involving a swimmer in distress. The person was able to get out of the water without assistance.
About an hour later, crews responded near Station 12, where three swimmers entered a posted no-swimming area. Bystanders helped all three safely return to shore.
A third call came shortly after 5 p.m. near Station 18 involving two swimmers. Officials said both were able to exit the water on their own.
Officials Urge Caution
Fire Chief Anthony Stith said winds were ranging between 20 and 30 mph, contributing to strong rip currents and rough surf conditions.
Authorities are reminding beachgoers to pay attention to warning signs, avoid restricted swimming areas, and use extra caution while entering the water.
