A South Carolina woman is safe after escaping an alleged kidnapping and receiving help from a passing truck driver, authorities said.

Woman Escapes Alleged Kidnapping

According to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office, 39-year-old Jonathan Willard was arrested on Saturday and charged with kidnapping and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Investigators say the woman was walking home when Willard allegedly approached her, claimed to be a police officer, handcuffed her, and forced her into his vehicle.

Truck Driver Steps In

Truck driver Anthony Moore said he saw the woman running from the woods and into the roadway, desperately asking for help.

Moore told local media that the woman jumped into his vehicle and told him the man was trying to kidnap her. He said the suspect claimed to be a law enforcement officer, but the woman immediately denied it.

Another motorist reportedly called 911 after seeing the woman in handcuffs.

Suspect Arrested

Authorities said the woman managed to escape after the suspect stopped and left his vehicle door open.

Willard was later arrested and charged with kidnapping and impersonating a law enforcement officer.

Investigation Continues

The victim, who recently graduated, told investigators that the suspect allegedly took her phone and diploma.

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office is asking anyone who may have had similar encounters with Willard to contact investigators.
