The Coast Guard Auxiliary encourages boaters to prioritize safety ahead of National Safe Boating Week

As the summer boating season approaches in the Lowcountry, the Charleston-area U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is reminding boaters to prioritize safety. With National Safe Boating Week taking place from May 16-22, thousands of boaters are expected to take to the waterways, and officials are emphasizing the importance of preparation, education, and responsible behavior to prevent accidents.

Boating Statistics and Safety Concerns

The U.S. Coast Guard’s most recent data from 2024 reports 3,887 recreational boating incidents nationwide, leading to 556 fatalities and over 2,100 injuries. In South Carolina alone, there were 154 boating accidents, resulting in 10 deaths and 82 injuries.

John Swink, Division Commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Southeast District Division 12, stressed the importance of respecting Charleston’s waterways, one of the area’s greatest assets. “The vast majority of boating accidents are preventable. Simple steps—like wearing a life jacket, boating sober, and planning ahead—save lives,” Swink said.

Leading Causes of Boating Fatalities

The leading causes of boating fatalities include:

  • Drowning: About 75% of boating deaths
  • Lack of life jacket use: Nearly 90% of drowning victims were not wearing life jackets
  • Alcohol use
  • Lack of formal boating safety education

Key Safety Reminders for Boaters

The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is offering the following safety tips for boaters:

  • Wear a life jacket while underway
  • Watch your speed and operate at a safe speed for current conditions
  • Never operate a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • File a float plan with a trusted contact
  • Check the weather and tides before and during your trip
  • Carry proper safety equipment, including communication and signaling devices
  • Take a boating safety course

The Importance of Safe Boating

“Safe boating isn’t complicated, but it does require intentional decisions,” Swink said. “The goal is simple: everyone comes home safely.” To assist boaters in staying safe, the Coast Guard Auxiliary offers boating safety courses and free vessel safety checks for recreational boats and paddlecraft to ensure compliance with federal and state safety requirements.
