An investigation is underway after an inmate died at MacDougall Correctional Institution in Ridgeville on Thursday afternoon, according to Berkeley County Coroner Darnell Hartwell.
Inmate Death Under Investigation
Hartwell said the coroner’s office received the call at approximately 3:40 p.m. on Thursday and responded to the correctional facility.
Autopsy Planned
An autopsy will be conducted to determine the inmate’s cause and manner of death. Officials have not yet released the individual’s identity.
Suicide and Homicide Ruled Out
According to the initial investigation, authorities have ruled out both suicide and homicide as factors in the death.
The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
