A Spartanburg County councilman is scheduled to appear in court Thursday in connection with an assault and battery charge tied to an incident at USC Upstate.

Councilman Facing Assault Charge

Monier Abusaft has been charged with assault and battery following an alleged altercation at the University of South Carolina Upstate.

According to an incident report, campus police responded to a disturbance at the University Readiness Center on Feb. 28 and found two people involved in a physical and verbal confrontation.

Abusaft Describes Incident

Abusaft told reporters the incident happened during a Black History event and claimed the other person was repeatedly bumping into him.

He said he grabbed the individual to remove the person’s hands before others stepped in to separate them.

Alleged Victim Disputes Account

The alleged victim disputed Abusaft’s version of events and said the situation escalated quickly during the event.

However, they declined to provide further details publicly.

Court Hearing Scheduled

Abusaft previously appeared in bond court and was released on a $1,000 personal recognizance bond.

Court records show his criminal motions hearing is scheduled for Thursday morning.
