SULLIVAN’S ISLAND, S.C. — Eight swimmers were rescued Saturday afternoon after being caught in strong ocean currents near Station 16, according to Sullivan’s Island Fire and Rescue (SIFR).
Swift Response by Firefighters
Crews received a call around 4:43 p.m. reporting swimmers in distress. Firefighters arrived five minutes later and found multiple people struggling in the water.
SIFR crews immediately launched a jet ski rescue, bringing all eight swimmers safely back to shore.
Victim Treated After Being Unconscious
One 23-year-old man was unconscious and not breathing when pulled from the water. Firefighters positioned him on the beach, and he regained consciousness shortly afterward. EMS personnel were on scene and transported him to the Medical University of South Carolina for further evaluation.
Ongoing Investigation
Officials are still investigating the incident and will provide updates as necessary. SIFR reminded swimmers to exercise caution and avoid entering the ocean during strong current conditions.
