Nine persons were exposed to a rabid calf in Saluda County

South Carolina Department of Public Health confirmed that a calf in Saluda County tested positive for rabies.

Officials said the animal was located near Denny and Prosperity Highways.

Nine People Exposed to Rabies

According to health officials, nine people were exposed to the infected calf.

The calf was tested on May 12 and confirmed positive for rabies the following day.

Those exposed have been referred to healthcare providers for treatment and evaluation.

Other Animals Potentially Exposed

Health officials also said two other calves may have been exposed to the disease.

Authorities stated that appropriate safety measures and response actions have already been put in place.

Officials Stress Importance of Vaccinations

DPH officials reminded pet and livestock owners to keep animals up to date on rabies vaccinations.

Rabies is a deadly disease that can spread through infected animals.

Anyone who may have come into contact with a potentially rabid animal is asked to contact the DPH rabies reporting line.
