A former Columbia convenience store clerk faces trial next week for the shooting death of a teenager.
Case Overview
Rick Chow is charged with the May 2023 shooting of 14-year-old Cyrus Carmack-Belton. Prosecutors allege that Chow chased Carmack-Belton from his Parklane Road store after falsely accusing him of theft and then shot him in the back.
Pre-Trial Disputes
Chow’s attorneys requested a trial change of venue due to extensive media coverage and comments by elected officials. Judge denied the request, stating jurors will be carefully screened to ensure impartiality.
Evidence and Witnesses
Defense and prosecutors argued over what evidence the jury will see, including videos from the victim’s phone. While the state acknowledges Carmack-Belton had a gun that night, authorities say he did not intend to use it.
The judge also ruled that key witness Rutherford must testify despite previously planned vacation.
Trial Schedule
Jury selection for the case begins Tuesday. The trial is considered one of the most closely watched criminal cases in the Midlands in recent years.
