The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office announced Friday that four employees have been terminated following an internal investigation into alleged misconduct.
Investigation Began After Policy Violation Allegations
According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation started after officials received allegations involving employee conduct and possible policy violations.
Authorities said the investigation found that on April 18, an on-duty patrol sergeant allegedly engaged in sexual activity with an off-duty dispatcher and an off-duty deputy.
Alcohol Allegations Included in Investigation
Investigators also said three off-duty employees visited a local establishment in Aiken County where alcohol was consumed.
The sheriff’s office stated one employee involved was under the legal drinking age of 21 and was allegedly provided alcohol by coworkers.
Officials further alleged that an off-duty deputy drove a personal vehicle after consuming an excessive amount of alcohol while being followed home by the on-duty patrol sergeant.
Employees Terminated
The sheriff’s office identified the terminated employees as:
- Kyle Burkett
- Ashley Meyer
- Hannah Lamb
- Taylor Cable
Officials said all four employees violated departmental policies, agency standards, and public trust expectations.
Certifications Could Also Be Reviewed
The sheriff’s office said the misconduct findings are expected to be submitted to the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy for possible review of professional certifications.
Sheriff Releases Statement
Martin Sawyer said maintaining public trust is critical for the department.
In a statement, Sawyer said employees who fail to follow the law, departmental policies, or ethical standards will face decisive action.
