A tense overnight situation in Summerville ended with the arrest of a man after an alleged assault and standoff at a residential home. Authorities say the incident required a coordinated response from multiple agencies.
What Happened in the Incident?
According to the Summerville Police Department, officers were called to the Oaknoll subdivision around 12:30 a.m. on Monday following reports of an assault at a home on Swift Court.
When police arrived, they found that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the house, creating a dangerous situation.
Police Response and Standoff
Due to the seriousness of the situation, specialised teams were brought in. SWAT officers and trained negotiators were deployed to the scene to handle the standoff safely.
Other agencies also assisted, including the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office and emergency medical teams. During this time, authorities issued a public alert asking nearby residents to stay indoors, avoid windows, and keep away from the area for their safety.
Victim Rescued Safely
Officials confirmed that the victim involved in the assault was safely removed from the home before the situation escalated further. This was a key step in ensuring no additional harm occurred during the standoff.
Suspect Arrested
After negotiations, the suspect was taken into custody without further incident. He has been identified as Floyd Blair Mattern.
Charges Filed
Mattern has been charged with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, which is a serious offence under the law. He was taken to the L.C. Knight Detention Center following his arrest.
