North Charleston resident voices worries about speeding and increased neighborhood traffic

A North Charleston resident says increasing traffic and speeding have become major concerns in his neighborhood, but city officials say additional traffic-calming measures are not currently planned.

Resident Raises Safety Concerns

Kenneth Kinard, who has lived in the area for many years, said traffic has increased significantly on roads connecting North Rhett Avenue, Iroquois Street and Enterprise Boulevard.

He believes many drivers use the neighborhood as a shortcut and often exceed the speed limit.

Requests for Speed Humps

Kinard has repeatedly asked the city to install speed humps to slow traffic and improve safety.

While digital speed-monitoring signs have been installed and the speed limit was reduced from 30 mph to 25 mph, he says drivers continue to speed and ignore traffic rules.

City Says Additional Measures Not Needed

According to District 8 Councilman Brandon Hudson, a traffic study determined that additional speed humps were not warranted.

Hudson said a neighborhood survey also found that many residents did not support installing more speed humps.

Ongoing Concerns

Although city officials believe current traffic-calming measures are sufficient, Kinard remains concerned about the safety of drivers, pedestrians and families living along the busy roadway.

He worries that continued speeding could eventually lead to a serious accident.
