The Charleston Airshow is returning in 2026 with a big change that visitors should know about. This year, the event will not be held at its usual location. Instead, it will take place over the harbour, offering a completely new viewing experience for everyone.
New Location and Event Details
The airshow will be a one-day event on May 2 in Charleston. The performances will happen south of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, right above Charleston Harbor.
In earlier years, the show was organised at Joint Base Charleston over two days. However, in 2026, the format has changed. The popular Blue Angels and other aerial teams will now perform over the city’s waterfront, making it easier for more people to watch.
Crowd and Safety Planning
The event is expected to attract a large number of visitors, similar to the Cooper River Bridge Run. To manage the crowds, several agencies have worked together, including the Charleston Police Department, Mount Pleasant Police Department, U.S. Coast Guard, and U.S. Air Force.
Officials have clearly warned that people should be ready for:
- Heavy traffic across the city
- Road closures near popular spots
- Water restrictions in the harbour
- Limited access to certain routes and bridges
Best Viewing Areas
There are several public places where visitors can comfortably watch the airshow:

- Waterfront Park
- White Point Garden
- Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park
- International African American Museum
Private viewing events will also be hosted at locations like the USS Yorktown and Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina.
Traffic, Parking, and Restrictions
City officials are advising visitors to plan early and reach before time to avoid last-minute issues.
Parking
A flat fee of $12 will be charged at selected parking garages starting from 10 a.m. Visitors should avoid parking in hospital garages.
Bridge Closures
- Thursday: No closures
- Friday: Partial lane closures from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
- Saturday: Full closure from around 1 to 2:30 p.m.
- Pedestrian walkway: Closed from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on all three days
Road Closures
Certain areas will have tow zones and restrictions, including:
- Concord Street
- South Adgers Wharf
- Murray Boulevard
Water and Drone Restrictions
- Harbour restrictions will be active:
- Thursday: 12 p.m. to 4:15 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
- Drones are not allowed within 5 nautical miles of the harbour
Important Safety Tips
Authorities have strongly advised people not to stop their vehicles in the middle of roads or highways to watch the show. This can create serious safety risks, especially on busy routes like the Highway 30 connector.
Boat traffic is also expected to increase in areas like Shem Creek and Remley’s Point, so extra officers will be present to manage the flow.
