A North Charleston man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison after admitting to kidnapping and brutally assaulting the pregnant mother of his child inside a hotel room.
Man Sentenced for Kidnapping and Domestic Violence
Shandell Broadway, 33, received an 18-year prison sentence after pleading guilty on June 2 to kidnapping and domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
Broadway had been in custody since his arrest in November 2024.
Assault Lasted Several Days
According to prosecutors, the violence began on Oct. 29, 2024, following an argument over infidelity at a Hawthorne Suites hotel in North Charleston.
Authorities said Broadway struck the pregnant victim in the face, continued attacking her after she fell to the floor, and repeatedly stomped on her head and face.
Prosecutors said he then confined her to the hotel room for several days, preventing her from leaving for medical care and restricting the movement of her two children.
Victim Escaped With Children
The woman eventually escaped the room with her children on Nov. 1, 2024.
Police located them in the hotel lobby and took the victim to a hospital for treatment.
Severe Injuries Reported
Medical examinations revealed the woman suffered a broken nose, seven facial fractures, and a fractured orbital bone.
Prosecutors said the injuries were so severe that facial muscle tissue collapsed into fractured bone.
Prosecutors Praise Survivor
Assistant Solicitor Sara Locklear praised the victim for cooperating with the case, describing her as a survivor.
Court records also show Broadway had previous assault-related convictions in other states dating back to 2013.
