Mother faces felony murder and kid abuse charges after 14-year-old son with autism died while alone at home with his sister

Amanda Marie Morgan, 39, has been charged with felony murder and aggravated child abuse after her 14-year-old autistic son was found dead at their home in Theodore, Alabama.

Authorities say Morgan allegedly left her son and 16-year-old daughter, who also has autism, home alone overnight, leading to a tragic and preventable death.

The Incident and Charges

On March 24, 2025, Morgan pleaded not guilty to the charges. Investigators say the 14-year-old boy was accidentally strangled by his blanket while left alone overnight, resulting in his death. His 16-year-old sister was found in a severely malnourished state and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Signs of neglect were found throughout the home, which included feces on the walls, an infestation of bugs, and a lack of basic necessities like running water and air conditioning. The conditions raised serious concerns about the children’s safety and well-being.

Neglect and Previous Allegations

Investigators revealed that Morgan had reportedly left her children home alone for extended periods of time in the past, according to court testimony cited by WKRG. The authorities had begun their investigation in October 2025 when they responded to the mobile home park on Sperry Road, where they discovered the boy’s body.

Legal Proceedings

Morgan has been ordered to pay a $400,000 cash bond for the felony murder charge and a $40,000 cash bond for the aggravated child abuse charge. She is also prohibited from contacting her surviving 16-year-old daughter. A preliminary hearing for the case is scheduled for April 20, 2025.
