Two deputies with the Christian County Sheriff’s Office were killed following a traffic stop that escalated into a large-scale manhunt and shootout in southwest Missouri, authorities said.
Deputy Gabriel Ramirez, 30, was shot and killed around 4 p.m. on Feb. 23 during a traffic stop on State Highway 160 south of Highlandville, according to Sheriff Brad Cole. The suspect, identified as Richard Bird, fled the scene, triggering an extensive search effort.
Massive Search Effort and Second Deadly Shootout
More than 100 law enforcement personnel — including local deputies, state troopers, U.S. Marshals, FBI and ATF agents — joined the manhunt. Bird’s vehicle was later found abandoned along State Highway 160.
Early the next morning, authorities located Bird in a wooded area of Stone County, Missouri after a Missouri Highway Patrol helicopter detected a moving heat signature. When deputies approached, Bird allegedly opened fire.
During the exchange, Deputy Michael Hislope, 40, was killed and two other deputies were wounded. Officials said the injured deputies are expected to recover.
Community Mourning and Tribute
Sheriff Cole described the tragedy as devastating for the department, honoring both deputies for their service and sacrifice. Ramirez had joined the sheriff’s office in March 2025, while Hislope had served since October 2019. Both men had also served in the U.S. Army.
Doug Rader, sheriff of Stone County, called it “probably the worst day in the history of the Christian County Sheriff’s Office.” Authorities have asked the community to keep the deputies’ families and colleagues in their thoughts during what officials described as an incredibly difficult time.
