Investigators with the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene near Howard Street and Simuel Road on Tuesday, Feb. 17. Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger was called to the area around 10 p.m., and the victim was later identified as Jose Julian Morales-Diaz.
Troopers said Morales-Diaz had been walking along Howard Street when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
Remembered as Bright and Kind
Morales-Diaz was born in Chiapas, Mexico, and attended Dorman High School in Roebuck. In his obituary, he was described as a good student with a bright spirit and kind heart.
He was remembered as a joyful young man who loved soccer, especially cheering for Club América, and had dreams of becoming a mechanic. Above all, his obituary noted his strong faith and love for his family and friends.
Morales-Diaz is survived by his mother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and numerous other loved ones. A memorial service is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 27.
Community Support and Ongoing Investigation
Administrators with Spartanburg County School District 6 said mental health support is being offered to students following the tragedy, describing the district as heartbroken over the loss.
