The staff of Virginia Living is mourning the loss of 23-year-old editor Hope Cartwright, who was killed Monday evening in a hit-and-run crash while walking home from work in downtown Richmond.
According to reports from local outlets, Cartwright was crossing the street near the intersection of East Cary and South Second streets around 5:30 p.m. when she was struck by a vehicle that continued driving. She was transported to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Driver Arrested After Security Footage Review
Investigators with the Richmond Police Department used security camera footage to identify the driver, 41-year-old Latesha Coleman. Authorities tracked her to her home and arrested her on a felony hit-and-run charge.
A judge denied Coleman bail during her first court appearance Wednesday. She is scheduled to return to court on March 10 as the case proceeds.
A neighbor whose Ring camera captured the crash told reporters that Cartwright was in a marked crosswalk when the vehicle turned and struck her, describing the collision as seemingly unavoidable given her position in front of the car.
Newsroom in Mourning
Cartwright had worked at Virginia Living for nearly two years after graduating from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Editor-in-chief Madeline Mayhood described her as an exceptional team member who grew into a leader and talented storyteller during her time at the publication.
Coworkers reportedly rushed to her aid after recognizing her at the scene and remained with her until paramedics arrived. Colleagues said her sudden death has left the newsroom in shock and disbelief, remembering her as gifted, dedicated, and deeply valued.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
