Police responded around 11:36 a.m. to the 2000 block of Smithbridge Drive after the infant’s mother reported a stabbing; she stated Phillips spoke of “sacrificing the baby,” lunged at the child with a knife, and struck once before she fled with the baby and their 9-year-old son. Phillips pursued them outside, grabbed the infant from her arms, and threw him into the snow; the mother shielded the child until first responders arrived, who airlifted the boy—initially in very serious condition—to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for emergency surgery and ICU care.
