According to investigators, a man seeking to kill picked up a woman holding a baby in her driveway, knocked on the door, and bashed her with a hammer.

Jason Eastburn, a 43-year-old from Wichita, Kansas, allegedly attacked a 22-year-old woman holding her 1-month-old baby with a hammer on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2025, at a home in the 7200 block of E. 24th Street North.

Attack Details

Around 9:30 a.m., the woman answered a knock at the door, expecting a solicitor, but Eastburn smiled and said, “I’m going to kill you,” before striking her multiple times on the head with the hammer pulled from behind his back, pushing inside. She suffered a two-inch laceration requiring four staples; other residents, including a 76-year-old grandmother, intervened, wrestling him until he dropped the weapon, damaged a car, and fled to a nearby park.

Arrest and Confession

Police arrested Eastburn at the park with a forehead injury; en route to the hospital, he told a paramedic, “I killed a woman over there.” Post-Miranda, he admitted targeting the home due to multiple cars in the driveway indicating occupancy, intending to kill amid homicidal thoughts linked to childhood trauma, isolation, and an unmedicated mental illness; he called the sentimental hammer—his late father’s—his tool for the act and expressed relief at being stopped.

Charges and Status

Eastburn faces attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, aggravated endangering a child, criminal threat, and criminal damage to property, held without bond (later reports note $2 million) at Sedgwick County Jail.
