Police claim a man wearing a '#1 dad' necklace shoots his fiancee and her two children while leaving his own five-year-old child unhurt.

Charles Broomfield, 44, faces charges for the January 27, 2026, shooting deaths of his fiancée Jacqueline Neill and her sons, Cameron Kilpatrick, 15, and Michael Kilpatrick, 13, in their Grand Rapids, Michigan home on Worden Street SW, while his 5-year-old son was unharmed.

Initial 911 Call

Broomfield hysterically called police around 7:40 a.m., reporting a home invasion by two armed men who killed the victims after confronting Neill downstairs.
Officers found him calm beside Neill’s body in the living room, with the boys dead in their bedrooms; he claimed invaders took his gun after he heard shots.

Evidence Against Him

Paramedics estimated the victims died 40 minutes before police arrived, contradicting his timeline; no intruder footprints marked the snow outside.
His gun, claimed stolen by invaders, was locked in an outdoor box with only his footprints leading to it; the key hung on his “#1 Dad” lanyard, and ballistics matched it to the slayings.

Confession and Charges

After Miranda warnings, Broomfield admitted to the killings; he’s charged with three counts of first-degree premeditated murder and three felony firearm counts, facing life without parole if convicted.
Held without bond in Kent County Jail, his next court dates are February 10 (probable cause) and February 17 (preliminary exam).

Family Response

The victims’ family called the loss “senseless” and “heartbreaking,” leaving them devastated.
No motive has been publicly disclosed.
