Drivers in the Charlotte area can expect improvements at five Interstate 77 interchanges as part of a $5.2 million project announced by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Interchange Upgrades Planned
The project will include grading, paving, and drainage improvements at the following exits:
- Exit 16 – Sunset Road
- Exit 18 – Harris Boulevard
- Exit 25 – N.C. 73
- Exit 30 – Griffith Street
- Exit 33 – Williamson Road
Overnight Closures Expected
Because I-77 is heavily traveled, most lane and ramp closures will take place overnight between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m.
Additional restrictions will be in place during holidays and special events to reduce traffic disruptions.
Special Work at Sunset Road
NCDOT said the entrance ramps to I-77 North and South at Sunset Road will require more extensive repairs. The ramps will not be closed at the same time, but both must be repaired during the project.
Timeline
Construction could begin as early as late June and is expected to be completed by spring 2027.
