Drivers travelling between Charleston and Columbia may soon see major improvements, as the state plans a big project to reduce traffic problems on one of South Carolina’s busiest highways.
New Plan to Improve Traffic on I-26
The South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) is working on a statewide project focused on improving traffic flow along Interstate 26. This plan will cover the stretch from US 172 to I-26 between Columbia and Charleston.
Officials say this corridor is one of the most crowded and stressful routes for daily commuters.
Daily Traffic Frustration for Drivers
Many residents say traffic on I-26 has become a regular problem, especially during evening hours. Drivers often face long delays and slow-moving vehicles, making everyday travel frustrating.
Locals feel that the current road infrastructure is not enough to handle the growing number of vehicles. As more people move into the area, the pressure on roads continues to increase.
What Changes Are Planned
To fix the issue, SCDOT plans to add one extra lane on each side of the highway in Dorchester and Berkeley counties. This expansion is expected to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
The project is also designed with the future in mind. Officials want to ensure there is enough space to expand the road further if traffic continues to grow in the coming years.
Upgrades Beyond Lane Expansion
Apart from adding lanes, the project includes other important improvements. Bridges along the route will be repaired and upgraded to ensure safety and smooth travel.
There are also plans to improve key interchanges, especially at exits 172 and 177 near Harleyville and St. George. These upgrades aim to make it easier for drivers to enter and exit the highway without causing delays.
Public Input Invited
SCDOT wants local residents to share their opinions and suggestions about the project. Officials believe that people who use the road daily can provide valuable insights.
A public meeting will be held on April 28 at Woodland High School in Dorchester County from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. This will give residents a chance to ask questions and share feedback.
Project Timeline
The project is currently in the design phase. If everything goes as planned, construction is expected to begin in 2028.
