A 22-year-old woman in North Charleston was arrested after police said she fled from a traffic stop while her two-month-old infant was inside the vehicle.
Traffic Stop Leads to Police Chase
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers tried to stop a vehicle on June 11 near Dorchester Road and Apartment Boulevard after noticing it was driving without headlights or taillights.
When officers activated their blue lights and sirens, the driver, identified as Rudia Sylfrard, allegedly failed to stop and continued driving, including failing to stay in her lane.
Driver Refused to Stop
Police said Sylfrard eventually stopped at Dorchester Road and Michaux Parkway but then drove off again after initially refusing officer commands.
A second high-risk traffic stop was later carried out, ending the pursuit.
Infant Found in Backseat
When officers removed Sylfrard from the vehicle, they discovered a two-month-old infant secured in a car seat in the backseat.
Police said the child was safely released to a relative following the incident.
Charges Filed
Sylfrard was arrested and charged with failure to stop for blue lights and child endangerment. She also received citations for driving with a beginner’s permit and failing to use headlights when required.
Authorities said she told officers she did not realise police were attempting to stop her.
