Deputies reveal facts on two inmates who died days apart in Georgia jail

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia has reported two separate inmate deaths that occurred in June, both of which are now under investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

First Inmate Found Unresponsive on June 1

According to officials, detention officers discovered one inmate unresponsive but still breathing during a routine jail check on June 1. The inmate had earlier experienced a medical issue and had been treated by medical staff.

He was housed separately from other inmates due to ongoing health concerns. After being found unresponsive, he was transported to a hospital, where he died on June 9.

Second Medical Emergency on June 11

A second incident occurred on June 11 at around 4:16 a.m., when officers called 911 after an inmate in medical watch experienced a serious medical emergency.

The inmate was being closely monitored in a holding cell due to health concerns. During a routine check, officers found him unresponsive on the floor. He was taken to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Investigations Underway

The sheriff’s office said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been requested to handle both cases, following standard protocol for inmate deaths.

Authorities have not released additional details about the causes of death, and both investigations remain ongoing.
