A tense situation unfolded in Lexington County, South Carolina, after a teenager allegedly fired a gun during a public event at a popular park. Thankfully, no one was injured, but the incident has raised concerns about safety at community gatherings.
Teen Arrested After Gunshots at Local Park
The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department confirmed the arrest of Najee Thompson, an 18-year-old from Newberry.
He has been charged with:
- Pointing and presenting a firearm
- Using a firearm while under the influence of alcohol or drugs
- Breach of peace
Shots Fired During Event at Crooked Creek Park
The incident happened on Saturday evening at Crooked Creek Park in Chapin. Deputies said the suspect fired shots into the air while an event was taking place at the park.
According to authorities, Thompson reportedly told deputies he fired the gun because he believed the area was “the country.”
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no one was hurt during the incident. Even so, firing a weapon in a public place can be extremely dangerous and could have led to serious consequences.
Suspect in Custody
As of Sunday afternoon, Thompson was being held at the Lexington County Detention Center. Officials have not yet shared details about any court hearings or bond.
