An Alabama woman is facing charges for the shooting death of her husband, which occurred while he was sitting alone in their living room watching television.

Sheri Mitchell-Clutts, 65, is accused of murder in the commission of domestic violence, after fatally shooting her husband, 69-year-old Timothy Clutts, at their home in Russellville, Alabama, on Sunday evening.

The Shooting Incident

At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, Mitchell-Clutts called 911 and confessed to shooting her husband. When deputies arrived at their home on Duncan Creek Road, they found Timothy Clutts dead in his recliner, having sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest. The handgun used in the killing was discovered on top of a cooler in the house.

Mitchell-Clutts admitted to firing the fatal shot but gave two different explanations for her actions. She initially claimed that she felt threatened by her husband throughout the day. She said he had been checking on her, as she was recovering from open-heart surgery, and his actions made her feel unsafe.

Fearing that he might return, she grabbed her gun. However, when Timothy Clutts instead went to the living room to watch TV, Mitchell-Clutts said she decided to approach him and shoot him while he was seated.

Investigation and Background

The case appeared straightforward to authorities, as Mitchell-Clutts was open about her actions during the investigation. However, law enforcement officials expressed concern about what might have led to her violent response.

Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver noted the absence of previous domestic calls in the couple’s history, stating that after reviewing the past six years of calls, no history of domestic issues or prior incidents had been found.

Despite this, authorities are continuing to investigate the underlying circumstances and the relationship between the couple.

Legal Consequences

Mitchell-Clutts has been arrested and is currently being held in the Franklin County Jail with no bond. She faces charges of murder of a family member with a gun while in the commission of domestic violence. The case is still under investigation.
