A former Edgefield County School District employee has filed a federal lawsuit alleging racial harassment and retaliation after reporting the incidents to human resources.
Former Employee Files Lawsuit
Gregory Harris, who worked for the district for about 15 years, filed the lawsuit on May 30 in U.S. District Court.
Harris previously served as head custodian and a bus aide at Merriwether Elementary School.
Allegations of Racial Harassment
According to the lawsuit, Maintenance and Facilities Director Chris Ledbetter allegedly referred to Harris as “boy” in September 2024, which Harris claims carried racial meaning.
The complaint also alleges that Ledbetter accused Harris of being a drug dealer after he purchased a new truck, suggesting he could not have afforded the vehicle through legitimate means.
Harris claims the accusation spread among employees and community members, causing embarrassment and damage to his reputation.
HR Complaint and Alleged Retaliation
Harris says he reported the incidents to the district’s human resources department.
According to the lawsuit, the district investigated and found Ledbetter at fault, but Harris claims the only corrective action was a brief text message apology.
After filing the complaint, Harris alleges he faced increased hostility at work and that his working conditions worsened.
Resignation and Damages Sought
Harris claims the work environment became intolerable and that he resigned in August 2025.
The lawsuit seeks back pay, lost benefits, compensation for emotional distress and reputational harm, attorney fees, and other damages.
School District Responds
In a statement, the Edgefield County School District said it does not tolerate discrimination, harassment, or retaliation and takes such allegations seriously.
However, officials declined to comment on the specific claims because the matter is pending litigation.
