A Pennsylvania woman is on trial after prosecutors accused her of abusing and killing her 5-year-old adopted son, Landon Maloberti. Authorities say the child suffered repeated abuse before dying from severe injuries in 2023.
Pennsylvania Mother Accused in Son’s Death
Lauren Maloberti, 36, faces charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, and child endangerment in connection with Landon’s death. Her trial began this week in Westmoreland County.
Her ex-husband, Jacob Maloberti, also faces similar charges and is expected to testify against her during the trial.
Prosecutors told jurors that Lauren failed in her role as a parent and allegedly subjected the child to ongoing abuse.
Child Died After Being Taken to Hospital
According to investigators, the couple brought Landon to a Pittsburgh-area hospital on Jan. 30, 2023, while he was unconscious. He was later transferred to a children’s hospital, where he died about a week later.
Doctors reportedly found multiple bruises on the child’s body along with catastrophic brain injuries. Prosecutors said Landon died from blunt-force trauma.
Authorities also claimed medical staff noticed the couple showed “no urgency” when they arrived at the hospital.
Prosecutors Describe Ongoing Abuse
During the trial, prosecutors said the alleged abuse was not a one-time incident. Other children in the home reportedly told investigators that Landon was isolated, smacked, sprayed with water, and forced to drink from a toilet.
Witnesses also claimed he was treated differently from the other children in the house and monitored with a camera.
Lauren Maloberti’s sister-in-law testified that the mother was caring at first, but later became frustrated with Landon and complained about his behavior.
Defense Says Case Is Complicated
Lauren Maloberti’s lawyer denied the prosecution’s claims and argued that the case is being misrepresented.
Her attorney told the court that the facts are “complicated” and not straightforward. The defense also claimed prosecutors are trying to paint Lauren as a bad mother without fully understanding what happened.
The trial is expected to continue for about two weeks.
