A tragic case from Oregon has come back into focus nearly two years after a deadly shooting involving an Uber driver. New details shared in court have revealed that the driver was not the intended target, making the incident even more heartbreaking.
What Happened During the Shooting
The incident took place on June 4, 2024, in Oregon, where an Uber driver was transporting two teenage passengers.
According to prosecutors, a suspect — who was just 16 years old at the time — allegedly opened fire on the rideshare vehicle in what has been described as a planned ambush. The driver, 42-year-old Joshua Kelvin, was caught in the gunfire.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Target Was Not the Driver
Investigators later revealed that the suspect was actually aiming for the two teenage passengers inside the car, not the driver.
During the shooting:
- One teenager was shot multiple times and seriously injured
- The other passenger managed to escape by running away
The driver, who was simply doing his job, became an unintended victim of the attack.
Details Shared in Court
During a recent court hearing, prosecutors said the suspect fired between 17 to 18 rounds at the vehicle. The attack was reportedly planned along with another individual.
Devin Franklin told the court that the injured teenager was shot seven or eight times and continues to suffer from those injuries even today.
Ongoing Violence Linked to the Case
Prosecutors also shared that:
- The same gun used in this incident was allegedly involved in another shooting later that same month
- The suspect is believed to have used the weapon again in January 2025 to injure another person
However, officials have not clearly confirmed the suspect’s involvement in all related incidents.
Arrest and Charges
Now 18 years old, the suspect has been arrested and is facing multiple serious charges, including:
- Second-degree murder
- Two counts of attempted murder
- Conspiracy to commit murder
- Assault (first and second degree)
- Unlawful use of a weapon
- Attempt to commit a Class A felony
Even though he is now legally an adult, the case is being handled in juvenile court because he was a minor at the time of the alleged crime.
Court Proceedings
The suspect appeared in court recently, and a judge ordered that he be taken into custody after the hearing.
Details about his next court date have not yet been announced.
Why This Case Is Disturbing
This case raises several serious concerns:
- A planned ambush involving teenagers
- Use of a firearm with repeated incidents
- An innocent driver losing his life
- Long-term impact on injured victims
It also highlights the risks faced by rideshare drivers who may unknowingly be caught in dangerous situations.
