A disturbing incident in Kentucky has raised serious concerns after a young woman allegedly drove into a crowd during a night out. The case is now moving forward in court as more details continue to emerge.
Incident in Downtown Lexington
The incident happened in downtown Lexington near Short and Mill streets in the early hours of March 22. According to the Lexington Police Department, a group of people had gathered in a parking lot when a car suddenly drove toward them.
Officer Amelia Hardy testified that she saw a black car drive over a curb and into the crowd, hitting multiple people.
Injuries Reported
After the incident, four individuals approached officers with injuries. These included head and leg injuries, and in some cases, concerns about possible paralysis.
Video footage reportedly showed the car reversing before speeding forward and striking people, knocking at least two individuals to the ground.
Driver Identified and Arrested
Police identified the driver as Kaydence Carpenter, a 20-year-old woman. She has been charged with several offences, including driving under the influence, reckless driving, and second-degree assault.
Officers said she showed signs of intoxication, including the smell of alcohol and slurred speech. They also reported finding a fake ID inside her vehicle.
Allegations of Impaired Behaviour
According to testimony, Carpenter appeared to have impaired judgment and unusual behaviour at the scene. An officer stated that she was acting erratically, including dancing while being recorded.
Defense Raises Questions
Carpenter’s attorney has presented a different version of events. He argued that she may have been surrounded by people before the incident and claimed she was punched. He also suggested that someone in the crowd may have had a weapon.
However, police stated that the officer did not witness these earlier events and only saw what happened when the vehicle drove into the crowd.
Case Moves Forward
The case is now heading to a grand jury, where further evidence will be reviewed to decide the next legal steps.
