A shocking case in Mankato has left one man dead and a woman seriously injured after an alleged violent attack inside a home. Authorities say the incident involved a former partner who forced his way into the residence.
What Happened in the Case
44-year-old Joseph David Bulfer has been arrested and charged with multiple serious crimes, including murder and attempted murder.
Police responded to the home after a neighbour reported hearing gunshots. When officers arrived, they found Bulfer at the scene and quickly took him into custody.
Details of the Incident
Inside the house, police discovered a 37-year-old woman injured and hiding in a bathtub. In another room, they found 52-year-old Joshua Robert Downey, who had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was declared dead.
Investigators say Bulfer allegedly entered the home and opened fire on Downey using a rifle.
Attack on the Woman
Authorities said the woman was then forced into the bathroom, where she was assaulted. She suffered serious injuries, including broken ribs, a head injury, and a collapsed lung, and was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Events Before the Attack
The woman told police she had ended her relationship with Bulfer months earlier. On the day of the incident, he contacted her asking to meet, but she refused.
Later, while she and Downey were at home, Bulfer allegedly entered the locked house and carried out the attack.
Emergency Call and Arrest
Police reported that Downey managed to call emergency services after being shot. The call remained active, capturing parts of the incident as it unfolded.
Bulfer was arrested at the scene without resistance. Authorities said he made statements after his arrest and did not request medical help.
