A Montana woman, Kathryn Garaas, has been charged with deliberate homicide after allegedly suffocating her 5-year-old son, Reign Tyler Blair, with a plastic bag. The tragic incident occurred at their home near Whitehall, roughly 60 miles northwest of Bozeman. Garaas’ actions have left the local community and the boy’s family devastated.
A Disturbing Discovery
On the afternoon of April 24, 2023, deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical emergency call from Reign’s father, who had received a disturbing text message from Garaas. Concerned for his son’s safety, he requested a welfare check. When officers arrived at the home, Garaas reportedly greeted them and said, “he’s in his room.”
Upon entering the boy’s room, deputies discovered Reign’s lifeless body with a plastic bag over his head. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Garaas later told investigators that she killed her son because she believed she needed to “save him” from what she perceived would be a worsening situation.
A Mother’s Unfathomable Actions
Garaas’ reasoning for her actions remains unclear, and the community has struggled to comprehend the motive behind such a tragedy. She allegedly told deputies that she felt her son’s future would only become worse and that ending his life was a form of “saving” him. Colleen Much, who initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Reign’s family, expressed the pain and confusion that the family is facing. Much wrote, “We cannot and will absolutely not pretend to claim we have even a remote understanding of the reasoning behind this, or what occurred.” She also acknowledged that while answers may never come, they prayed for some form of resolution, though no amount of clarity could heal the immense pain.

Reign’s father, who had been raising his son as a single parent, is described as a loving and devoted father. Much expressed that Reign’s life was filled with love, laughter, and joy, and that his father was his “purpose, his love, and his life from the moment he took his first breath.” The GoFundMe description highlights the strength and resilience of a single father who had worked tirelessly to provide a fulfilling life for his son.
Legal Proceedings and Community Support
Kathryn Garaas is currently being held at the Jefferson County Jail without bond. She is scheduled to appear in court on June 10, where legal proceedings will continue.
