A powerful moment of gratitude and courage unfolded at a high school prom in Oklahoma, where a principal who risked his life to stop a potential tragedy was honoured in a truly special way. Just weeks after being shot while protecting students, he was celebrated as a hero by the very people he helped save.
A Hero’s Welcome at Prom Night
At Pauls Valley High School, students created an emotional and unforgettable moment by crowning their principal, Kirk Moore, as prom king.
A video from the event shows Moore walking through a cheering crowd of students, smiling and high-fiving them as they celebrated him. The DJ announced him as “our king,” while the song “Hero” played in the background, making the moment even more meaningful.
Students clapped, cheered, and gathered around him, clearly showing their appreciation for his bravery.
The Incident That Changed Everything
The celebration came just weeks after a dangerous situation unfolded at the school. On April 7, a former student, Victor Lee Hawkins, entered the school lobby armed with two loaded semi-automatic pistols.
Surveillance footage later showed the tense moment when Hawkins pointed a gun at a student. Hearing the disturbance, Principal Moore rushed to the scene without hesitation.
A Brave Act That Saved Lives
As Hawkins turned and aimed the weapon at him, Moore charged forward. The attacker fired a shot, hitting Moore in the leg. Despite being injured, Moore continued to act quickly.
He tackled the gunman, pushed him toward a bench, and held him down. During the struggle, the attacker dropped the weapon, allowing a nearby student to escape safely.
Another staff member quickly joined Moore and helped restrain Hawkins until police arrived and took him into custody.
Motive Behind the Attack
According to investigators, Hawkins admitted that he had planned the attack. He reportedly told police that he wanted to harm Principal Moore and had gone to the school with that intention.
He also mentioned being inspired by the Columbine High School massacre, one of the most tragic school shootings in US history. Authorities confirmed that he had stolen the guns from his father before carrying out the attack.
Legal Action and Investigation
Hawkins now faces serious charges, including shooting with intent to kill and other firearm-related offences. His court hearing is scheduled for May 8.
Officials from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation praised the quick actions of the school staff, especially Moore, for preventing what could have been a major tragedy.
A Community’s Gratitude
Kirk Moore has been working in the school district for more than 35 years. His actions that day showed not only courage but also deep care for his students.
The prom tribute was more than just a celebration—it was a heartfelt thank you from students whose lives were directly impacted by his bravery.
