A 54-year-old former nurse’s aide, Denise Beard, is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly abusing several patients, including a 95-year-old woman who later died.
Beard is charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death and battery against a disabled person. The incidents took place at the Munster Med Inn and South Shore Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The Incident Involving Laura Stump
On December 14, a nurse reported hearing screams from a patient room at Munster Med Inn. Beard was found pushing 95-year-old Laura Stump too close to a bed, causing skin to tear.
Stump’s daughter later claimed Beard punched, grabbed, and shook her mother, making racially charged comments. Stump suffered a stroke two days later and died on December 23.
Other Alleged Abuse
Other residents came forward with allegations against Beard, including accusations of physical abuse and racial slurs. One woman claimed Beard punched her in the forehead, and an 80-year-old man said Beard threw a water bottle at his face.
Previous Incidents
Beard had been fired from South Shore Health and Rehabilitation Center after being accused of striking a 95-year-old resident. She was also suspended after making inappropriate comments about a patient.
Arrest and Legal Proceedings
Beard was arrested and is being held on $40,000 bond. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
