Authorities in Utah have arrested a husband and wife in connection with the death of their 11-year-old son after investigators alleged the child suffered years of abuse.
Child’s Death Initially Reported as Suicide
Police in Tremonton said officers responded to the family’s home on Sept. 21 after receiving a report about an unresponsive child. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to investigators, father Brigham Merrell claimed he found the child hanging by a coaxial cable and suggested the boy died by suicide.
Investigation Revealed Alleged Abuse
Police later said evidence contradicted that account. Investigators alleged surveillance footage showed Brigham moving the child upstairs while emergency responders were outside trying to enter the home.
Authorities also reported finding injuries on the child that they said were inconsistent with hanging. Investigators further alleged the children in the home suffered years of abuse, including beatings, food restriction, and punishment involving belts, pans, and being forced to stay in an outdoor dog run.
Charges Filed
Brigham Merrell has been charged with child abuse homicide and child torture. Melinda Merrell has been charged with child torture.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
