A man in Lewiston, Pennsylvania, is facing charges for allegedly starting a deadly house fire after his romantic advances were rejected by a woman living in the residence. The blaze, which occurred late on Wednesday, May 6, resulted in the death of one woman and left two others seriously injured.
The Fatal Fire
The Lewiston Police Department (LPD) responded to the house fire at approximately 11:55 p.m. on May 6. Upon arrival, authorities found that the fire had caused significant damage and that several residents had been trapped inside. One person, 44-year-old Brandy Phillippe, was confirmed dead at the scene. She had tried to escape the fire but was unable to make it out in time.
Two other residents suffered serious injuries: one man sustained significant facial injuries after jumping from the second floor of the building, while a woman passed out from smoke inhalation and fell onto the concrete sidewalk below. Both survivors were rushed to trauma centers for medical treatment.
Arson Confirmed as Cause of the Fire
The Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal confirmed that the fire was an act of arson. Witnesses told authorities that Robert Zimmerman, 40, was seen at the house before the fire started, where he had been professing his love for a female resident living in the attic of the home. According to reports, Zimmerman became angry after being rejected by the woman and allegedly started setting several items on fire on the first floor of the residence.
Witnesses also claimed they heard Zimmerman confess to starting the fire, and police reported seeing him later standing in a nearby alley as the house burned. Surveillance footage appears to support the claims, confirming Zimmerman’s presence near the scene.
Zimmerman’s Arrest and Statements
Zimmerman was later found smelling of ash and smoke, prompting his arrest on an outstanding warrant related to the fire. During questioning, Zimmerman admitted to using fentanyl and showed signs of opioid overdose, prompting his hospitalization at Geisinger Lewistown Hospital. After being treated, he was transported to the LPD for further questioning.
Zimmerman reportedly told police that he couldn’t recall specific details about the moment the fire began but made several statements about the events leading up to and following the fire. Upon learning that a resident had died in the blaze, Zimmerman allegedly reacted emotionally.
Investigation and Charges
The Mifflin County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) is investigating the death of Brandy Phillippe as a homicide. An autopsy was conducted on May 9 to determine the cause of death. As of May 10, the investigation is ongoing, and the MCCO has yet to provide an update.
Zimmerman is being held at the Mifflin County Correctional Facility, where he faces multiple charges, including arson, in connection with the deadly fire.
