Two Texas brothers, Enrique and Romeo Aguilar, have been charged in connection with the tragic shooting death of 17-year-old Mariah Alatorre, which occurred after a party on Valentine’s Day in 2026. Enrique Aguilar, 19, faces a charge of murder, while his brother, 18-year-old Romeo Aguilar, is charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.
Events Leading to Mariah Alatorre’s Death
The incident unfolded in the early hours of February 14, 2026, at a party on Dagg Road in southeast Houston, where about 300 people had gathered. Police responded to a disturbance call around 12:30 a.m., and as officers arrived, gunshots rang out, and several individuals fled the scene. Mariah Alatorre was among those shot and was rushed out of the party in a friend’s car, ultimately being driven nearly 40 miles north to an urgent care clinic in Cypress before being transferred to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest. Sadly, Mariah succumbed to her injuries there.
Her mother, who had been trying to reach her daughter throughout the night, later learned from the hospital that Mariah had been shot. She expressed her heartbreak and confusion, questioning why her daughter was taken so far from the scene for medical care. “What happened between those hours?” she asked, desperate for answers.
The Investigation and Arrests
After more than two months of investigation, authorities believe they have arrested the men responsible for Mariah’s death. During a court hearing, prosecutors revealed that Mariah had left the party with friends, including Enrique Aguilar, and when they parked near the urgent care clinic, Aguilar allegedly began playing with a gun, leading to the fatal shooting.
Enrique Aguilar claimed the shooting was accidental, but the judge overseeing the case raised doubts, pointing out that multiple shots were fired and video evidence showed Aguilar leaning over Mariah and smirking, which suggested a lack of remorse.
Family’s Grief and Reflection
Mariah Alatorre was remembered in her obituary as a kind and loving soul who brought joy to everyone around her. Her family described her as deeply caring and selfless, always going out of her way to help those she loved. Her mother, in an emotional interview, expressed her pain, stating that her daughter had trusted the wrong people that night, including Enrique Aguilar.
Court Appearances and Bail
Enrique Aguilar has been detained on a $500,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on June 11. Romeo Aguilar is being held on a $30,000 bond, with his court appearance scheduled for Friday. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez confirmed that the Aguilar brothers were arrested by the District 1 Crime Reduction Unit and the Violent Criminals Apprehension Team.
As the case continues, the family of Mariah Alatorre is left searching for answers and justice for the loss of their beloved daughter.
