A Colorado man has been sentenced to 41 years in prison after shooting his ex-wife while their two children sat in the backseat of the car.
Colorado Man Sentenced in Ex-Wife Shooting
Brandon Allen, 48, pleaded guilty to attempted murder and several other charges connected to the March 2024 shooting in Longmont, Colorado.
According to investigators, Allen shot his ex-wife, Nicki Douglass-Johansen, in the neck and leg while she was sitting in her car outside her home.
Children Witnessed the Shooting
The couple’s 7-year-old twins were in the backseat during the attack but were not physically injured.
Court documents said one of the children told police they ducked down because they feared their father might shoot them as well.
After the shooting, the children rolled down a window and yelled for someone to call 911.
Suspect Called 911 After Attack
According to police, Allen called 911 after fleeing the scene and reportedly told dispatchers, “I think I just killed my ex-wife.”
Authorities later found him near Highway 36, where he led officers on a brief chase and allegedly fired shots from his vehicle before being arrested.
Police said Allen appeared intoxicated, and officers found alcohol containers inside his car.
Victim Survived Serious Injuries
Douglass-Johansen survived the shooting despite suffering severe injuries to her neck and jaw.
Court records also showed Allen was prohibited from having a firearm because of a protection order already in place against him.
A judge sentenced Allen to 41 years in prison, calling the shooting a brutal act of domestic violence.
