The City of Charleston’s Board of Zoning Appeals has approved the removal of more than 22 grand oak trees in West Ashley to make way for a new apartment development.

Tree Removal Approved

The historic trees are located along Grand Oaks Boulevard in West Ashley.

The removal was approved despite concerns and complaints from community members about the loss of the mature trees.

Apartment Project Planned

Developers plan to clear the trees as part of construction for a new apartment complex in the area.

The project will move forward under conditions set by the Board of Zoning Appeals.

Conditions for Developers

As part of the approval, developers must plant more than 490 inches of native canopy trees along Grand Oaks Boulevard.

They are also required to submit a tree preservation plan detailing protections for each of the 22 historic trees affected by the project.

Community Concerns Raised

Residents previously voiced concerns about removing the grand oak trees, which are considered an important part of the area’s landscape and character.

The development will now proceed under the conditions outlined by city officials.
