Mount Pleasant threatens to withdraw consent for Highway 41 project as the county moves up on permits

Charleston County is moving closer to starting the long-planned Highway 41 expansion project, but some Mount Pleasant leaders are pushing back and may try to delay the work.

Highway 41 Expansion Nears Approval

The project would widen Highway 41 from two lanes to four lanes and add a new roadway through Laurel Hill County Park.

County officials expect to receive key permits this year and could begin construction as early as this winter.

Mount Pleasant Leaders Oppose Plan

Several Mount Pleasant council members want to withdraw the town’s consent for the project, arguing that residents remain concerned about the proposed road through Laurel Hill County Park.

A vote on the issue is expected on July 14.

Concerns Over Traffic and Environment

Residents in nearby neighborhoods worry the new road could increase traffic on local streets as drivers look for shortcuts around congestion.

Others have raised concerns about the environmental impact of building the roadway through park land and wetlands.

County Says Project Is Needed

Charleston County officials say traffic studies show the new road is necessary to reduce congestion and improve traffic flow.

They also warn that major changes to the project could jeopardize permits, state funding, and transportation sales tax dollars already allocated for the work.

Decision Expected in July

Mount Pleasant Town Council is expected to discuss the proposal to withdraw consent during its July 14 meeting while the county continues pursuing final permits for the project.
