A Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to murder in the death of his 9-month-old daughter and is expected to be sentenced next month.
Baby Died After Suffering Head Injuries
Syied Malik-Kawon Epps, 31, was charged in the death of his daughter, Sy’kia Epps, who was taken to a hospital with severe brain injuries on July 26, 2023.
The infant died four days later, leading authorities to upgrade the case from assault to murder.
Children Witnessed Incident
According to investigators, Epps initially claimed the child was injured while in the care of a babysitter. However, police said he could not provide meaningful information about the alleged caregiver.
Detectives later interviewed three children who were in the home at the time. Authorities said the children reported seeing Epps cause the infant’s injuries.
Guilty Plea Entered
Epps has since pleaded guilty to murder. Prosecutors are recommending a 25-year prison sentence as part of the case.
Sentencing Set for July
The 31-year-old is scheduled to be sentenced on July 1 in Lexington, Kentucky.
