CHARLESTON, S.C. — A shooting early Sunday morning on King Street near Burns Lane left one person dead and two others injured, Charleston Police said.
Suspect in Custody
Andre Ramon Nesbit, 35, of Charleston, was arrested in connection with the incident. He faces charges including murder, two counts of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
Details of the Shooting
Police reported responding to the area around 2:30 a.m., where three victims were located. Nesbit reportedly had a brief argument with the initial victim on the sidewalk outside Gilroy’s Pizza Pub at 353 King St., then opened fire. The suspect fatally wounded the first victim and struck two bystanders.
Responding officers applied multiple tourniquets and bandages at the scene. The victims were transported to the Medical University of South Carolina, where one was pronounced dead. Police have not yet released the identity of the deceased. One victim’s injuries were life-threatening, while the third sustained non-life-threatening wounds.
Community Reaction
Residents and business owners expressed shock over the violence in a familiar area. “So crazy it was like really right next to where we live, like it’s insane,” said witness Skylie Crecco. Business owner Nick Patel added, “First time, that’s why I’m scared… Never happened.” Students also described the shooting as surreal, noting the incident occurred in the immediate vicinity of campus.
Investigation and Law Enforcement Response
Detectives and crime scene investigators are actively investigating. Gilroy’s Pizza Pub has since reopened. The College of Charleston Department of Public Safety informed the campus community that there is no evidence the shooting was random or that an ongoing threat exists.
The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Mount Pleasant Police Department, North Charleston Police Department, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office, and College of Charleston Public Safety.
Statements from Officials
Charleston Police Chief Chito Walker said, “Gunfire is never and will never be an acceptable way to settle a disagreement… One person is dead, two others were shot, and families are now carrying pain that no arrest can undo.”
Mayor William Cogswell added, “A suspect is in custody… We have zero tolerance for those who come here to harm our residents and visitors.”
