GREER, S.C. — A devastating head-on collision early Friday morning on Highway 101 in Spartanburg County claimed the lives of five people, including two sergeants with the Greenville Police Department.

Victims Identified

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office confirmed the identities of the victims:

  • Ashley Munoz, 35, of Woodruff — an 11-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department and a sergeant since 2023, supervising criminal investigations units including property crimes, financial crimes, and family crimes.
  • Deborah Sue Wyatt, 50, of Duncan — occupant of the northbound Ford SUV.
  • Max Douglas Wyatt Jr., 46, of Duncan — occupant of the northbound Ford SUV, later died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.
  • Maria Del Rosario Munoz, 62, of Greenville — passenger in the Toyota SUV.
  • Arturo Leon Munoz, 64, of Fountain Inn — passenger in the Toyota SUV.

Another passenger from the Toyota, Diana Munoz, 12-year veteran of the Greenville Police Department and current Public Information Officer, was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Her condition has not been disclosed.

Ashley and Diana Munoz were married with two young children and reportedly returning from vacation when the crash occurred.

Crash Details

The Trinity Fire Department was dispatched just before 1 a.m. after an iPhone crash notification alerted authorities to the incident near Bellview Road Extension. Responding crews found a northbound Ford SUV and a southbound Toyota SUV, both with multiple occupants trapped.

According to the SC Highway Patrol, the Ford SUV was traveling north while the Toyota SUV was traveling south when the vehicles collided head-on.

Memorial and Public Support

The City of Greenville has set up a memorial for Sergeant Ashley Munoz at the Public Safety Campus, located at 204 Halton Road. The public is invited to pay respects and show support for the family and the Greenville Police Department.

Investigation

The crash remains under investigation by the SC Highway Patrol and the Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office. Officials have not yet released information about the cause of the collision.
