Authorities in Charleston County are warning residents about a growing scam involving juveniles asking for money outside local businesses.
Juveniles Targeting Shoppers for Donations
The Charleston County Sheriff’s Office says groups of juveniles have been approaching people outside stores, especially near a Walgreens on Folly Road in Charleston County.
They reportedly ask for donations, claiming the money is for a basketball team to cover expenses like uniforms, equipment, and tournament fees.
Use of Cash and Digital Payments
According to authorities, the juveniles are not only asking for cash but are also encouraging people to scan a Cash App QR code to send money digitally.
This has made it easier for them to collect funds quickly from unsuspecting individuals.
Pattern of Repeated Incidents
Officials say similar incidents have been reported multiple times over the past eight months. Different groups of juveniles have been involved, but the method remains the same.
Investigators believe the signs used to promote the supposed basketball team are fake.
Warning to the Public
The sheriff’s office has advised residents not to engage with these individuals or give them money. They believe the funds are being collected under false pretences.
