A late-night police chase in North Charleston, South Carolina, ended with a major arrest and the seizure of a large amount of illegal drugs. The incident happened on Friday evening and involved risky driving, a short pursuit, and a tense arrest situation before officers finally took the suspect into custody.
What Happened During the Chase
According to the North Charleston Police Department, officers were on proactive patrol around 8:20 p.m. in the Ashley Phosphate Road hotel area. This area had received multiple complaints about heavy narcotics activity.
Police noticed a suspicious vehicle entering and quickly leaving a parking lot, which raised concerns. When officers tried to stop the vehicle after spotting a traffic violation, the driver refused to pull over and sped away.
The chase continued onto Interstate 26 and later exited onto Aviation Avenue.
Dangerous Driving and Crash
During the pursuit, the driver reportedly ran a red light and lost control. The vehicle crashed through a chain-link fence but did not stop there. Instead, it continued moving into the back of a parking lot and hit another fence.
This reckless driving put both the suspect and others nearby at serious risk.
Arrest of the Suspect
After the vehicle stopped, the driver got out and behaved in a threatening way. Police said he repeatedly reached toward a large knife attached to his hip while officers ordered him to lie down.
The situation became tense, but once backup officers arrived, the suspect followed instructions and was safely taken into custody without further trouble.
The man has been identified as Jason Burggess Sudderth, aged 40.
Drugs Recovered by Police
During the search, officers found a significant quantity of suspected narcotics. Initial field tests showed:
- Around 85.45 grams of a crystalline substance believed to be methamphetamine and fentanyl
- About 7.1 grams of a white powder substance believed to be MDMA and fentanyl
- Additional suspected drugs stored inside a lockbox in the vehicle
These substances are considered highly dangerous, especially fentanyl, which is known for its strong and deadly effects even in small amounts.
Charges Filed Against the Accused
Sudderth is now facing several serious charges, including:
- Trafficking methamphetamine
- Trafficking fentanyl
- Possession with intent to distribute MDMA
- Failure to stop for police (blue lights)
- Resisting arrest with a deadly weapon
- Possession of a weapon during a violent crime
After his arrest, he was taken to the Al Cannon Detention Center.
Ongoing Concerns About Drug Activity
This case highlights ongoing concerns about drug-related activity in certain parts of North Charleston. Police patrols in such areas are often increased to prevent illegal activities and keep communities safe.
Authorities continue to encourage the public to report suspicious behaviour, which helps in early action and crime prevention.
This incident shows how quickly a routine patrol can turn into a high-risk situation. Thanks to quick action by police, a potentially dangerous suspect was arrested, and a large amount of illegal drugs was removed from the streets. While no injuries were reported, the reckless driving and presence of a weapon made the situation serious. Cases like this remind us of the ongoing fight against drug trafficking and the importance of strong law enforcement efforts to maintain public safety.
